I would again ask you to be pleased to forward my application for an increase of salary.

In August 1896 and in November 1897 you kindly forwarded like petitions..

To the first a reply was received atating

that provided the work continued to increase the Right Honourable the Secretary of State for the Colonies would not refuse to entertain an application after somewhat further service, and to the other petition a reply that owing to the financial condition of the Colony my applica- timcould not, for the present, be entertained.

I would respectfully beg to state that I have

all but completed eight years services as Assistant Marine

Surveyor.

.The revenue of this sub-department is probably

the fairest criterion of the work performed..

In 1883, the year in which an assistant surveyor was appointed it amounted to $9811.50, in 1892, the year

in which I was appointed, to $9,985.43, and last year to

$13,598.61, by far the largest on record and nearly $1,000 more than the preceding year.

The Government work which as you are aware,

sir, shows no revenue is steadily increasing and this

increase bids fair to be maintained.
